Careers with Dunn
Dunn Associates, Inc. is growing strategically and looking for the best people. As a leading structural engineering firm in the intermountain area for over 20 years, Dunn Associates continues to be involved with some of the best projects in the region. Exclusively focused on structures, we innovate, create, and optimize unique structural solutions for our loyal public and private clients. Our seismic design criteria is equal that of California, so a command of high-end seismic analysis and design is a must.
The successful candidate(s) will first and foremost be required to have high personal skills while interacting with our clients. We are professional consultants and our attitudes and manors are of high importance. Interaction with other design professionals within our office is expected.
Our reason for growing is not project specific but rather a sound business decision.
Benefits
Compensation is very competitive and varies with experience. Dunn pays full medical for the employee and their dependents, covers full dental for the employee, life insurance policies, engages in 401k matching, contributes $2,000 annually to Health Savings Account (HSA), and gives generous PTO (including holiday and vacation days). Other perks to be discussed as the dialog progresses.
Our Culture
Passions
Creativity
Can you believe that we get paid well to come up with cool ideas? Our office environment fosters it, our culture expects it, our recruiters look for it and our clients appreciate it.
Confident
Our services are not for everybody. We charge more because we deliver more. We expect just as much from our clients as they do from us. We love this challenge and want to earn our keep with every project. Never will we take a job or client for granted.
Mobile
“Have laptop, will travel.” Our greatest value is with our clients, whether it be in front of a video conference call or face to face. Nobody incorporates more technology and ways to stay connected with our own team and our clients.
Flexible
We are consultants and as such, it is our duty to be responsive to changes in both time and substance. We chose this role and understand our best path to success is through our clients’ success.
Personable
We don’t hire nerds! Talk to us about current affairs, sports, and politics. We have opinions and will engage in fun and stimulating conversations. Meetings can be long and boring, we don’t care to contribute to the boring part.
Vision
We are built on a very solid foundation. For twenty years we have been patient and deliberate in our growth and client base. We know clearly what our strengths are and how to scale each of them. We are now poised to grow and become the force in the profession that we have envisioned for so many years. We will now spread into surrounding markets both nationally and internationally. We clearly see ourselves as a prominent figure in the industry with highly skilled professionals in each satellite office. This vision drives our desire. This will happen.
Ideas
Relationships
We have always believed that our clients pay the bills but our relationships make us rich! We strive to associate ourselves with those whom we trust. Trust is the product of a successful relationship. Our constant goal is to be worthy of our clients’ trust. Then magic happens!
Success
We believe that architects and engineers should be equally vested. Technology should enhance our abilities and be beneficial to all our clients. Sometimes it is needlessly overwhelming and unprofitable. We want to create a profitable business not a professional practice.
Working Environment
We have always embraced the idea that one $10/hour employee is worth far more than two $5/hour employees. We don’t make money off our employees but rather because of them. We don’t believe in a job by job compensation program. This stifles creativity and inspires selfishness. We want to be creative without the temptation of personal gain. We want the next generation at Dunn Associates to be better than the last.
Open Positions
Structural Engineer – St. George, Utah
Overview:
This Isn’t a Satellite Office. It’s a Home Base.
St. George is not a fallback location. It is one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, surrounded by some of the most spectacular landscape on earth, and sitting at the center of a corridor that stretches from Las Vegas to Phoenix to Salt Lake City and beyond. The projects are real, the clients are serious, and the work is the same caliber you would find at any top firm in any major market. The difference is that you get to go home to red rock country.
If you grew up in southern Utah and assumed you would have to leave to do meaningful work – you don’t. If you are somewhere else and have wondered what it would look like to build a career in a place where your after-work hours are as good as your work hours – wonder no more.
About Dunn Associates
We are a structural engineering firm based in Salt Lake City and St. George, licensed in all 50 states and working on projects across the intermountain west and beyond. We are not the biggest name in the room, and we have never wanted to be. We compete on something most engineering firms never think to offer: what it actually feels like to work with us, and what it actually feels like to be one of us.
Our tagline is not marketing copy. It is the operating model: The experience is the product. The people are the brand.
We hire people we genuinely like, knowing we can build the engineer. We invest in who our people are becoming – not just technically, but as professionals and as people. The result is a team where relationships run deep, where the work is engaging, and where younger engineers are not just executing tasks but learning how to think, how to communicate, and how to grow into the kind of engineer that architects and owners come back to, again and again.
Why St. George
There are firms that put people in satellite offices and call it a regional presence. That is not what this is. Our St. George team is a full, growing, in-office operation – connected to the culture and resources of our SLC home base, but with its own energy and identity rooted in one of the most dynamic places in the west.
Here is what the St. George life looks like:
- Year-round outdoor recreation – hiking, mountain biking, climbing, golf, and red rock in every direction
- Zion National Park is 45 minutes away. Bryce Canyon, the Grand Canyon North Rim, and Lake Powell are weekend trips
- A cost of living and quality of life that major metro markets simply cannot match
- A city that is growing fast – which means the projects are growing with it
- Access to work stretching from Las Vegas and Phoenix to Salt Lake, Denver, and Boise – without sacrificing where you live
This is a place where you can build a serious career and actually enjoy the life that career is supposed to support.
What We Are Hiring For
We are intentionally growing our St. George team – not because the workload spiked and we need more bodies, but because we are building something designed to last. We are looking for engineers at various stages of their career who want to be part of a team where the work is seen, the growth is real, and the culture is something you will not find anywhere else.
When the world shifted during the pandemic, a lot of firms scaled back to protect their numbers. We didn’t. We chose to protect our people. That was not a slogan. It was a leadership decision made in a real moment when it mattered. The same long-view shapes how we hire today.
What This Looks Like in Practice
You will work alongside engineers who genuinely enjoy teaching and collaborating. You will be part of real project teams from day one – not tucked away or assigned busywork. You will learn how buildings come together, how to communicate with architects and contractors, and how to solve problems in ways that balance creativity and practicality.
The projects we work on are meaningful. The clients we serve expect more than a set of calculations – they expect a partner who cares about their project and shows up for it. That is the standard we hold ourselves to, and it is the environment you would be walking into.
Your growth is part of the firm’s growth. Those things are not in tension here. They are the same thing.
Who We Are Looking For
Not a resume type. A person type.
We are looking for people who are curious, collaborative, and invested in doing things well. People who want to be known – by their team, by their clients, by the profession – as someone who cares about the work and the people around them. Technical foundation matters, but it is not the whole picture. We can teach engineering. We cannot teach character.
If you are from southern Utah and have been looking for a reason to come home – or build a home – this is it. If you are somewhere else and the combination of serious work and exceptional place sounds like what you have been looking for – we want to hear from you.

Calling Salt Lake City Home
Forbes rated Utah as the #1 state with the biggest GDP growth in 2021. Additionally, US News and World Report ranked Utah as having the third best economy. Due to what is called the Lake Effect, Utah has “the greatest snow on Earth”, resulting in fourteen resorts – ten of which are within one hour of Salt Lake City. Despite the many ski resorts, Utah is also a desert that hosts five major national parks. Calling Utah home means there is always something to do, no matter the season.
