Several seismic reports and schemes for seismically strengthening the existing Douglas Elementary were prepared and cost estimated. Ultimately it was decided to strengthen the existing building using a wall core system. The primary purpose of the additional reinforcing was to add ductility to this un-reinforced masonry building. In addition to strengthening the walls of the building, elevators and additional features were integrated into the building to meet ADA requirements.
