The design of this recreation center was centered on functionality and durability. One of the main design challenges was to design a sustainable, relatively low-maintenance building in the large pool environment while still providing large walls of glass with views to the surrounding areas. To maintain the views and provide an open feel to the structure, the design was focused on the wind and seismic force resisting system on a concrete moment frame.
Early on in the schematic design phase several systems where considered. It was determined that the best performing system in the humid pool environment would be concrete. Concrete satisfies the durability and low maintenance aspects the best.
